Describing people effectively requires a blend of physical observation and an understanding of character. In this heartwarming piece, Sophia Leung demonstrates her ability to use sophisticated adjectives to paint a beautiful portrait of her friend, Janette.
The Writing: Introducing a Friend
By Sophia Leung
Have you ever met a bright person who is also interested in drawing and singing? Meet my friend, Janette!
She is seven years old and is a caring, bright, and considerate person. She loves drawing and singing, and her favourite foods are pizza and sushi. Her drawings are beautiful, but even though she loves to sing, she is quiet in class. We both go to our English writing class on Fridays.
I think she is a clean and smart girl with a soft voice. I believe that if she practices more, she will be a good singer one day.
Teacher’s Analysis
Sophia has produced an excellent example of character-based descriptive writing, moving beyond simple facts to explore personality and potential.
Emotional Adjectives: Sophia uses high-level adjectives like "caring" and "considerate," which show a deep level of emotional intelligence and vocabulary range.
Contrast and Conjunctions: The use of "even though" to contrast Janette's love for singing with her quiet nature in class shows an advanced understanding of sentence structure.
Advanced Vocabulary:
Caring: A warm adjective used to describe someone who shows kindness and concern for others.
Considerate: A sophisticated term for someone who thinks of others' feelings; a significant upgrade from "kind."
Favourite: Correct use of the British English spelling for a preferred item or activity.
