The Writing: Giving Directions

By Lewis Siu

To get from the Petting Zoo to the Land of Lost Socks, start at the Petting Zoo, which is in the north-west corner of the map. Walk straight ahead to Stumble Street. You will see a shop named "Sky Ride of the Rich and Famous." You can ride on some exciting rides there too!

Then, walk straight until you reach Exhaustion Path. You will see a shop named "Strange and Useless Souvenirs," where you can buy some souvenirs. Follow Exhaustion Path to the intersection near the Land of Lost Socks. You will also see the Picnic Area on your left. You can have a picnic and take a short rest there. In the Picnic Area, there is also a food store where you can buy snacks if you are hungry.

After that, turn right to enter the Land of Lost Socks. This is your destination. You will see a shop called "Mrs Overprice's Refreshments" where you can buy some daily items.

This is the easiest route to the Land of Lost Socks. Enjoy your adventure!

Teacher’s Analysis

Lewis has produced a high-quality piece of procedural writing that balances technical accuracy with creative flair.

  • Spatial Awareness: Lewis successfully uses compass points ("north-west") and relative directions ("on your left," "straight ahead") to orient the reader effectively.

  • Complex Sentence Variation: He moves beyond simple instructions by adding descriptive clauses about the shops, making the writing more engaging.

  • Advanced Vocabulary:

    1. Intersection: A sophisticated noun used to describe the point where two paths meet.

    2. Destination: A formal term for the end of a journey, showing strong vocabulary range.

    3. Daily items: A natural collocation used to describe common household or personal goods.
